  1. Weekly Report Monday 5th August – Sunday 11th August 2019

August 18, 2019 9:43 am Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 5th August – Sunday 11th August 2019

    Report by Martin O’Brien.

    What do 5 & 10k, 3, 5 & 10 miles, 7 sisters, 1073 feet and rock’n’roll got in common?! That’s right…nothing, yet everything!

During this week Orangegrove managed to be represented at all those distances, in different types of races and overcame the steep Lurig and Seven Sisters mountains along the Club journey. Step in to our haphazard world by reading on:

CRAWFORDSBURN 5K – 7 August (Report by Gerald Harvey)

Since this is not an easy 5K, there was a certain amount of trepidation on arrival at Crawfordsburn Country Park, on a warm and humid Wednesday evening. There were six OAC runners present, so there could be no touring round, admiring the scenery. The first two kilometres were a tough up and down the glen, under the magnificent railway bridge, then up again, from the bottom of the long car park, to some easier running in the next couple of kilometres. Nearing the end of the hard final kilometre, the finish flags on the narrow uphill path were a very welcome sight.

Andrew Tees did very well to finish third out of 229 runners, in a time of 18:15. The race was won by Luke Dinsmore (Springwell Running Club) in 17:06 and first lady was Kirsti Forster (East Down AC) in 19:39, 16th overall. OAC Results:

    Andrew Tees             18:15

    Jonathan Weston     22:04

    Michael O’Donoghue 22:18

    Gerald Harvey           27:49

    Reg Sanlon               27:51

    Elaine Weston           28:26

MALLUSK HARRIERS 5 MILE ROAD RACE – 9 August (by Brian Todd)

There is usually a sense of trepidation and impending doom as one drives up the M2 towards Sandyknowes and Mallusk for the Harriers’ 5 Mile Road Race. The main reason for the trepidation is ‘that hill’. Now, I have never really been phased by the odd incline, but the Sealstown Road hill is no ordinary hill. It is very steep and seems to be never ending. It is an invidious hill too. Every now and again the road levels out to lead you into a false sense of security. Just when you thought the worst was over another hill appears, worse than the previous ones. This state of affairs goes on for well over a mile until the top is eventually reached, at which point you are left wondering where the energy will come from to tackle the remaining three and a half miles.

At least the hill comes early in the race. However, even on reaching the top it is not all plain sailing and it is certainly not all downhill from the turn. At several points on the Boghill Road, high above Mallusk, there are hills to be endured, although not in the same league as the initial one. To be fair the final mile down Hydepark Road is downhill and fast, making for a very quick finish. The evening was not a great one weather wise, but it could have been worse. The rain stayed off and the cool breeze in places was welcoming rather than a hinderance.

This was an extremely well organised race by our friends at Mallusk Harriers. The marshals around the course were superb and encouraging all the way. The post-race festivities were, as usual, excellent, the centre point being the very generous pizza fare courtesy of the main sponsor, Pizzarella. There was an excellent goody bag too (the best I have ever seen) and a very innovative spinning centre piece medal which, in my case, will provide the grandson with hours of fun.

Orangegrove was represented by the following members:

    Jonny Weston           34.18

    Michael O’Donoghue 35.45

Brian Todd                 36.44 (MV 65-69 prize)

    Ali McConnell             40.02

    Carolyn Beattie           41.06

Reg Sanlon               42.42 (MV 70-74 prize)

The Mallusk 5 Mile Road Race was won by Mark McKinstry (North Belfast Harriers) in 26.46 and Shalene McMurray (Newcastle AC) was first lady in 30.44.

THE LURIG CHALLENGE – 10 August

The Lurig Challenge Run, along with a few pints in the Lurig Bar, is the highlight of the Heart of the Glens Festival. It is set in beautiful surroundings and if you make it to the top of the Lurig and can still breathe…you’ll certainly have a superior view.

This 3.8 mile race starts in the main street of Cushendall and leads up the Stony Lonan steps, followed by a mile along a farm track to the base of the mountain. The 1073 feet of climb up the Lurig Mountain could be crudely described as using your sheep dropping-clad hands to claw your way up a steep version of hell with your two calf muscles constantly aflame to reach a peak of exhausted serenity followed by a sliding, skipping, fearful, flailing, wailing wedgie on the way down!

However…it has to be tried at least once (not the wedgie) and all is forgiven, when you realise you have somehow survived the ascent and descent and you enter the colourful, raucous, adrenaline-pumping, vibrant corridor of ear-splitting support in that unforgettable final straight to the finish line buried in the crowd. That final section is also helped by it being downhill, you are mildly recovered, you probably look quite fast in front of the great support and that they didn’t see you crying going up…or your eyes crossed on the way down!

On that (bum) note…a very well done to Steven Gilliland and Selina Myles for conquering The Lurig Challenge in a race won by Jonny Steede of Glens Runners in a gravity-defying 29:33 and Gemma McDonald of Ballycastle Runners in 36:59.

    Steven Gilliland 55:00

    Selina Myles     1:32:23

    MULLAGHMORE 3 MILE RACE – 10 August

If you were to come across a race in Mullaghmore you’d be pretty happy if you were to be 1st female finished, 3rdoverall and help raise funds for the Mullaghmore Hospice Fund and…that is exactly what Gemma Blake done in a eyebrow and fund-raising 20:16! Well done Gemma. Jakob Buchretter won it in 18:20.

    Gemma Blake 20:16 (1st Female & 3rd overall)

BRITISH MASTERS TRACK & FIELD OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – 10 August (by Alan Martin)

Jim Harris was competing on Saturday in the v70, 400m at the British Masters outdoor track and field championship in the Alexander Park stadium, Birmingham. Jim finished 4th with a season’s best time of 73:29. A great result against a top quality field.

    Jim Harris 73:29

    PARKRUN

OG’s Danny Bradley scored a cracking PB of 18:00 at Victoria Park, whereas Lyndsey Tyro was 1st female home at Orangefield Parkrun in 22:08, where, Martin Doherty picked up a course PB. Unfortunately, Verity Cornford’s 1sttime appearance at the lovely Castlewellan Parkrun may have been trumped, in travelling/destination terms, by Alison Canning’s 1st time visit to the Jamaica Pond Parkrun in Boston.

    ROCK’N’ROLL 10K DUBLIN – 11 August

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin offers fun and live music along the course and you can run past some of Dublin’s most famous landmarks like Christ Church Cathedral and the famous Guinness Brewery in the Half Marathon or take part in the 5 or 10K course which are now fully held within Phoenix Park this year and finishes with the Half Marathoners and, afterwards you can enjoy the headliner at the finish festival concert.

Elaine Weston let her feet play the music and was the lead rock’n’roll star for Orangegrove by rocking her way around 10 kms of Phoenix Park and finishing 348th out of 2,170. Rock on Elaine!

    Elaine Weston 54:02

    MONAGHAN 10 MILER – 11 August

The Monaghan 10 Mile and 5 Mile hosted by Monaghan Town runners had the race HQ, Start and Finish line all located in the centre of Monaghan town’s Court House. As the 2 races started at 12:30 and came back into the town centre finish, there was almost a constant buzz with entertainment, food and drinks also on offer.

The winner of main 10 Mile event was John Whelan of Shercock A.C in 55:17 and Aisling Murray of Carmen A.C in 1:04:47. Orangegrove had the following 3 representatives in this highly polished 10 Mile race consisting of 450 runners:

    Michael O’Donoghue 1:11:02

    Marcia Sharkey 1:37:34

    John Ferris 1:49:18

  2. Weekly Report Monday 22nd July – Sunday 28th July 2019

August 6, 2019 10:59 am Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 22nd July – Sunday 28th July 2019

The main action this week was at the Giant’s Trail Race, as the Club Championship followed up Sea2Sky with another off-road race for round 8 of the competition.

Organised by Dub Runners, the Giant’s Trail takes runners on a meandering loop through the woods and fields of the Lagan Valley beyond the Dub playing fields. Visiting Shaw’s Bridge, Minnowburn, the Giant’s Ring, Edenderry Village and the Lagan towpath along the way, the course provides a fun mix of flat and hills across grass, gravel and tarmac, with a bouncy bridge thrown in for good measure!

19 Orangegrovers took to the start line in search of valuable CC points, and there were plenty of good performances. Even though the race is ‘only’ 6 miles, getting even within a couple of minutes of your 10K time on the hilly course is an achievement. Andy Mac led the orange vests home as usual, finishing in a superb 7th place overall, David Montgomery and David Carberry completed the OAC mens’ podium. Gemma Blake was the first OAC lady across the line, and 6th female, followed by Alison Canning and Carolyn Beattie, both running well.

The race winner was North Belfast Harriers man Philip Goss in 34:12, and winner of the ladies race was Ita Monaghan of Lisburn in 45:09.

    Full OAC results as follows:

    Andrew McIntyre 00:37:39

    David Montgomery 00:41:24

    David Carberry 00:42:32

    Ryan Kerr 00:43:38

    Jonathan Weston 00:44:00

    Robin Montgomery 00:44:27

    Michael O’Donoghue 00:46:13

    Gemma Blake 00:47:52

    Alison Canning 00:51:40

    Carolyn Beattie 00:53:18

    Heather Shanks-Miller 00:53:51

    Gillian Logan 00:54:37

In udder news, Brian Todd and Reg Sanlon took part in the 5Mile Milk Race in Ballymoney on Friday evening. Brian has kindly provided the following race report…

“While the majority of Orangegrovers made their way to The Dub on Friday evening for the Giant’s Trail Race, Reg Sanlon and Brian Todd chose to ply their trade at higher latitudes. This year the Lakeland Dairies 5 Mile Milk Race at Ballymoney was a round of the Baker-McKenzie Super 5s Series. So, to Ballymoney it was, whether we liked it or not, and both of us were sorry to miss the Club Championship race in the Lagan Valley. The Milk Race started and finished at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre and took in a mainly rural and roughly square route to the south of the town. On the map the route appeared fairly straightforward and mainly flat. However, maps can be deceptive (mine was!) and there were one or two significant climbs, one of them particularly invidious in that it lasted for the most part of a mile. Not easy in the very humid conditions that prevailed.

Post-race festivities by the host club, Springwell, were very good indeed and, overall, race organization was both slick and efficient. Timing was by Championchip.

Gareth Lyons (North Belfast Harriers) won the Milk Race in 26.57 and Gemma McDonald (Ballycastle Runners) was first lady in 30.45.”

    Brian Todd…35.30 (64/215).

    Reg Sanlon…40.29 (118/215).

    ————————————————-

Finally, Andrew Tees took part in the penultimate leg of the IMRA Irish Championships on Saturday, racing to the summit of Leinster’s highest mountain, Lugnaquilla (718m), and back down again. Andrew finished in 1:03:44 for 15th/71.

  3. Weekly Report Monday 15th July – Sunday 21st July 2019

July 24, 2019 9:16 am Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 15th July – Sunday 21st July 2019
All roads seemed to lead to the North Coast this week as Portrush held The Open but no one told a large group of Orangegrove runners who headed in the opposite direction to take part in the latest Club Championship Race. Sea2Sky was the main event in what was otherwise a quiet week.
Portaferry Gala 10 Mile Race Tuesday 16th July (by Gillian Logan)
The annual Portaferry 10 mile Road Race events take place in the picturesque town along the shores of Strangford Lough. The race forms part of the annual Gala celebrations and sees a competitive field from all over NI make the journey on what was the a beautiful sunny evening for a good nights racing.
The event comprises a 10 mile individual race and a two person rely event (not to mention the traditional Gala Mug given to early entrants!) The route starts outside the sports arena and takes runners into the atmospheric Shore Road before tackling an undulating route through the scenic Co Down peninsula. With good support and marshalling along the route, runners are then given an impressive welcome back into the town square as it prepares for the annual Gala event activities.
OAC had one entrant in the 10 mile event and one participant in the relay race. Gillian Logan made a solid comeback to racing finishing in 01:20:20. Alan Montgomery made up the 2nd leg of the relay team’ Are We Nearly There Yet’? clocking 01:40:13.
All runners were treated to a much needed and tasty refreshments in the sports arena afterwards. Thanks for Mags and her team for top organisation as always.
    Sea2Sky 10k Friday 19th July
The latest round of the club championship saw 25 members brave the rain, thunder, lightning, hills and mud for Born 2 Run’s Sea2Sky event in Newcastle. Starting on the promenade the route goes out the Annalong Road before turning back towards Donard Park and a steady climb to the edge of Donard Forest. This is the highest point of the course as well as the halfway mark. A scramble over open ground before a fast descent into Newcastle and a finish back on the promenade. Congratulations to Andy McIntyre for his second place finish in a field of 730 runners. Full results for Orangegrove are below and latest championship standings are on the club’s facebook page. The race was won by Gordy Graham (East Down AC) in 36:19 and Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers) in 28:41.

Acorns AC Bluebells 5km Saturday 20th July (by Gillian Logan)
Gillian Logan made the journey west of The Bann to take part in the annual Acorns AC Bluebells 5km at the stunning Lough Fea in Co Tyrone.
The female only event is organised by Cookstown based Acorns AC and takes a one and a quarter loop round the banks of the lake nestled within the Sperrin Region of Mid Ulster.
With the weather being so poor on Friday it turned out to be a warm and dry day for the trail race but some gusty winds on the easterly side of the lough made for a good battle.
181 ‘Belles’ took part with Gillian producing a solid 23.24 to come 16th, which was her 2nd race in the space of a few days having ran Portaferry 10 miler on Tuesday.
Gillian was well rewarded with a lovely pink running vest and super spread of sandwiches, tea and cakes at the finish line.
A friendly and welcoming event which comes highly recommend to other female club members for next year.
The Barclay Races Sunday 21st July
A series of races for well known blind runner Tony Barclay took place in Carrickfergus on Sunday. There were three distances all run around the Carrickfergus parkrun course- 10k, half marathon and marathon. Michael O’Donoghue represented Orangegrove AC and finished in 5:06:03 (14/26) in a race won by Jianping Zhang (3:40:27) and Jill McCann (4:05:15). A fantastic total of £2048 was raised for Tony.
    PARKRUN
There wasn’t the usual OAC representation at Victoria parkrun probably due to the exertions of the night before. Furthest travelled this week was Keith Weir who finished a creditable 3rd in Chrzanow parkrun in Poland. Reg Scanlon was a first timer at Dungloe parkrun. Elaine Weston got a new PB at Stranmillis and a band of five (Selina Myles, Catherine McIntyre, Lisa Fleming, Melinda Wilkinson and Michael O’Donoghue) were part of Sixmilewater’s first event in Ballyclare. IRISH RUNNER 10 MILE, Dublin, 13th July, 2019.

This was the final race in the Athletics Ireland Race Series and part of the National 10 Mile Championship. Four OAC runners were on the start line of a course in Phoenix Park, Dublin, described as ‘not known to be the easiest’, but at least the weather was kind.

OAC Results: 1. Alan Martin, 1:34:24; 2. Brian McFarland, 1:37:33; 3. Jackie Grant, 1:38:33; 4. Beverley Martin, 1:50:22. Well done to all four.

The race was won David Flynn (Clonliffe Harriers AC) in 00:49:55 and first lady was Niamh Clifford (Star of the Laune AC) in 00:59:58, 53rd out of 1232 runners.

FPSG NATIONAL MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS, Grangemouth Stadium, Scotland, 13th July, 2019.

The ever competitive Jim Harris won gold in the M70 category of the 400m and 800m in 01:14.57 and 03:04.45 respectively. He got a silver in the 200m in 33.40.

DUNLEER 4 MILE ROAD RACE, Dunleer, Co. Louth, Sunday 14th July, 2019. [Report by Brian Todd]

I entered the Dunleer 4 Mile Road Race on a whim. And why not?! There wasn’t much happening north of the border and Co. Louth is my home county. The village of Dunleer lies about half way between Dundalk and Drogheda. It used to be a familiar watering hole on the old road to Dublin. However, in recent years it has been significantly bypassed by the new M1 motorway and as a result it has become more sleepy and certainly more up-market. This race, which usually attracts a quality field, is organized by the local Dunleer AC in memory of two departed former members, Ollie Brennan and Sean Carrie.

The route started and finished on Dunleer main street and took in some of the fairly undulating roads in and around the village. Heat was the main problem. Temperatures were well into the 20s and what slight breeze there was didn’t seem to have much of a cooling effect. There were nearly three hundred runners and, as you might expect, the organization was very slick indeed and a good post-race feast was served in the local GAA hall, the Lannelire Pavilion.

The Dunleer 4 Mile Road Race was won by Gideon Kimosop (1 Zero 1) in the incredible course record breaking time of 19:24 (for four miles!). First lady was Niamh Devlin (Dundrum, South Dublin AC) in 23:48.

    Brian Todd….27:50 (53rd out of 287 runners).

    Terry Eakin (North Down AC)…26:20.

DONEGAL WILD ATLANTIC MARATHON, 14th July, 2019. [Report by Michael O’Donoghue]

Now in its 2nd year of running, the Donegal Wild Atlantic Marathon has proven to be a popular addition to the bustling calendar of Donegal races. In common with events like the Quadrathon and Seven Sisters it offers a tough challenge and striking views.

Two race distances were on offer, half and full marathon . The half started and finished at the folk village of Glencolmcille, going out to the coast at Malin Beg and turning round at the cliffs overlooking the striking Silver Strand, one of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen. The full marathon, which I did, started in the fishing town of Killybegs before lots of tough climbs to the town of Carrick, past the famous cliffs of Slieve League, before joining the half route. In total, I counted 2200 feet of climbing on the route, a stiff challenge for a road marathon.

There were just over 100 doing the full marathon, and over 400 for the half. I had to dig deep for a time of 4:32:42 and a dip in the ocean at the end, followed by a barbecue in the gorgeous weather. Adrian Scullion was in first place with an unbelievable time on those hills of 2:47:38. Ciara Cunningham was first lady with a time of 3:53:30.

  5. Weekly Report Monday 1st July – Sunday 7th July 2019

July 11, 2019 5:24 pm Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 1st July – Sunday 7th July 2019
    Report by Michael O’Donoghue
North Down AC Open Meet – 2nd July
It was a busy evening for us on Tuesday. It was the start of the half marathon training plan, in addition to event number 7 in the club championship in Bangor. This was a North Down AC open track meet. There were many distances on offer, but a select few that the seniors were interested in for club championship point purposes. The races were age graded, meaning that you were up against what would be a good time for your age at that distance.
Most chose the 1500m distance and the results were as follows:
    Danny Bradley 4.46.27
    David Montgomery 5.01.11
    Robin Montgomery 5.11.11
    Selina Myles 7.01.25
    Catherine McIntyre 7.11.42
Danny was in first place in his race, and David continued to establish his supremacy over his brother at every race distance.
Always one to choose the longest distance available in a race, I reluctantly chose the 5000m distance and squeaked a sub-21 with a time of 20.59.92
Stephen Orr is a specialist at the 400m distance and finished his race in 2nd with a decent time of 58.99 and Jim Harris did well with a time of 74.00.
For good measure the sprinters Jim Harris and George Gribben did the 100m distance and finished in a dead heat of 15.43.
We also had a couple of juniors present. Sarah Van Der Linde did the 70m hurdles (13.91) and 100m (14.56) and Martha Orr did the 100m (15.37)
    Sunshine festival 5k – 4th July
Heather Flint made the journey equipped with club vest to St Simons Island in deepest Georgia on US independence day to do the Sunshine Festival 5k.
She did well in the US deep south heat and humidity with a time of 23.59 and 2nd in her age category in a race of some 800 runners. Let’s hope we see some more race tourism out there!
Greyabbey 5K/10K, Round the Springs, 5th July, 2019 by Gerald Harvey
Six Orangegrove AC runners were in Greyabbey on a pleasant Friday evening, to tackle a course that started gently enough on the flat of the Newtownards Road and along Main Street, but was suddenly tough on the sharp uphill of North Street, followed by the tiring undulations of Carrowdore Road. Spring Lane was much easier and welcome respite before the left turn into a long straight of the Newtownards Road, leading to the finish of the 5K or halfway point of the 10K, just beyond the village hall.
In the 5K, Brian Todd, intent on propelling himself up the money list in the Baker McKenzie Super Fives series, finished 29th out of 223 runners in 21:04. Some distance behind, but trying hard were: Gerald Harvey, 58th place, in 24:02; Reg Sanlon, 64th place, in 24:23 and first timer Elaine Weston, 76th place, in 25:40. The race was won by Gareth Lyons (North Belfast Harriers) in 15:56 and first lady was Sarah Jane McFadden (North Belfast Harriers) in 18:58, 10th= overall.
In the 10K, David Montgomery did very well to finish 10th out of 138 runners in 39:19, fending off his brother Robin who was 14th in 40:41. The race was won by Stephen Wylie (Victoria and Connswater AC) in 32:59 and first lady was Kerry Speers (North Down AC) in 39:02, 8th overall.
Thanks to the organisers, all those who provided the tea and sandwiches afterwards and Glenn Grant of ChampionChip Ireland. The race was in aid of Alopecia UK.
Great Rossa Run – 7th July
An example of a great community run, the Great Rossa Run takes place around the village of Ardboe in deepest Mid-Ulster on the banks of Lough Neagh. The race had good numbers this year attracting some 800 athletes across the 5k, 10k and half marathon distances. Impressive considering it wasn’t part of Novosco, Super 5 or the half marathon series which dominate the schedules these days. I do remember liking the atmosphere, the sausage baps and the ice bath at the end, so maybe that had something to do with it!
From the club we had the prolific Elaine Weston present, fresh from the Greyabbey 5k and Stranmillis Parkrun the same weekend, who completed the hilly 10k in 54:41. The race was won by living legend Tommy Hughes (Termoneeny) in 34:14, and first lady was Alisa Small in 40:27
    Parkrun
Andrew Corken got an all-time PB at Stormont. Brian McFarland got a course PB at Valley. Consolidated results at https://www.parkrun.com/results/consolidatedclub/?clubNum=17953

  6. Weekly Report Monday 24th June – Sunday 30th June 2019

July 10, 2019 4:27 pm Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 24th June – Sunday 30th June 2019

With the Summer racing season well under way, we catchup on all the action from Team OAC!

    Ards Half Marathon

On Friday 28th June Ards Half Marathon made a welcome return to the racing circuit after a years break. Organised by the relatively newly formed Scrabo Striders, the event gathered some 400 participants each ready to take on the well known undulating route.

Participants are treated to some great views of Scrabo Tower and the LeCale area of North Down as they cover the 13.1 mile course.

OAC had 5 athletes taking on the challenge in what turned out to be hot and sunny conditions for the 6.30pm start. The course had not changed much from previous years with the exception of the start finish area at the newly opened Ards Blair Mayne leisure complex. Participants still had to take on the famous climbs towards Strabo Tower, the descent into Comber and the long drag up The Moat Road before finishing back the leisure centre.

Below are the OAC results, well done guys!

    Jonathan Weston: 01:41:26

    Heather Flint: 01:52:19

    Heather Shanks-Miller: 01:55:44

    Andrew Bennett: 01:58:08

    Carolyn Beattie: 01:58:34

    Antrim Coast Road Marathon

On Saturday 29th June, Larne AC again staged the Antrim Coast Road Marathon after a successful resurrection of the event last year to coincide with the clubs 30th anniversary.

The 26.2 classic race distance takes a point to point route from Cushendall to Larne along the famous Antrim Coast Road, which treats runners to some spectacular views of the Antrim Coast and Glens.

After Friday evening hot and humid conditions it was a wet and thundery affair on Saturday but our trio from OAC battled bravely to produce the below results, with MOD even having time to stop for a Magnum Ice Cream in Carnlough!

    David Carberry 03:27:35

    Steven Gilliland 03:41:55

    Michael O’Donoghue: 04:09:06

Very well done to the OAC lads on what turned out to be tough conditions.

NI Masters Track & Field Championships

Also on Saturday 29th, OAC had a strong turn out for the NI Track & Field Championship organised by the NI and Master Athletics Association and held at the prestigious Mary Peter’s track.

Under the guidance of our experienced track coach, Alan Martin, we had 7 athletes who vied for medals across a number of distances and the results speak for themselves!

George Gribben 100m Bronze and 200m Silver

Jim Harris 400m and 800m gold

Stephen Orr 400 Bronze (Great come back from injury)

    David Quigg 400m bronze

    Gerry Ward 800m gold

    David Montgomery 3000m silver

    Ali McConnell 3000m gold

It is super to see some of our experienced road runners step out of their comfort zone by taking to the track!

    EAMS Schools Out Marathon

Our resident Endurance specialist Michael O’Donoghue was on the road again on 30th June to complete his 2nd marathon within 24hrs. Yes…you did read that correctly…2 marathons in 2 days and all this off the back of a super performance at Energia 24hr the previous weekend! The man is unstoppable.

MOD ran well to finish in 5:24:36.

We hope you are having a wee rest this week MOD, but knowing you, probably not!

ORANGEGROVE AC WEEKLY REPORT 17-23 JUNE 2019 by Martin O’Brien
COMBER 10K, 21st June, 2019. (by Gerald Harvey)
The Comber 10K was round 9 of the 2019 Novosco 10K Grand Prix. Only five OAC runners were on the start line at 7.30pm on Friday, the longest day of the year and the official start of summer. It was no surprise, however, when the blue skies became overcast as the race got underway. After a slow start on Castle Lane, the runners turned right and accelerated uphill along Mill Street and Belfast Road to the left turn at the Comber bypass. Even at this early stage the two 50 minute pacers (yellow t-shirts with matching balloons) were proving a bit too lively for some. On leaving the bypass at the second roundabout, it was downhill nearly all the way back to the town, with the pair of yellow t-shirts still in sight. Then it was uphill for about a kilometre, from below The Square to the Comber bypass where it was necessary to dig deep for the last four kilometres. A big crowd had turned out to watch, so a final sprint was almost automatic, maybe not up to the George Gribben standard, but a sprint nonetheless.
Julie McKimm was much too quick for the rest of the Orangegrove bunch, finishing just outside the top 100 in 43:08. The race was won by Gareth Lyons (North Belfast Harriers) in 32:49 and first lady was Eimear McCracken (City of Lisburn AC) in 39:45, 42nd overall.
    OAC Results:
    1. Julie McKimm, 43:08 (PB), 104th out of 739 runners; 2. Alison McConnell, 47:45, 222nd place; 3. Gerald Harvey, 50:52, 316th place; 4. Edwina Ternan, 54:52, 428th place; 5. Marcia Sharkey, 58:10, 527th place.
Thanks to Ballydrain Harriers (especially those 50 minute pacers who both finished in 49:57) Glenn Grant (ChampionChip Ireland) and Mags Mathieson for all their hard work. There was a one litre bottle of water, a nice medal and plenty of good food and a hot drink for everyone afterwards. Hopefully, Orangegrove AC will make a much stronger showing here in 2020.
    DRINAHILLY 21 June
Distance 4.75 miles, climb 1080 feet
The final race in the Hill and Dale series is a fast course lasting 4.75 miles and with a climb of 1080 feet and it takes you around the trails of Donard Forest. As per tradition, this race takes place on the Friday night and was followed by the prize giving, banter and more. Robin Montgomery and Andrew Tees once more represented the club, with no hill or dale too much for them. Andrew finished 4th on the night (1stM35) but very impressively… finished 6th Male overall in the league. Well done on such great consistency.
MPT Team Trophy League Sat 22 June
A fabulous day with some great variation in track events and impressive club performances. It was topped off with the OG Juniors taking home the Senior 4x100M Gold in 44:27… brilliant lads. Other very notable results were:
Andy McIntyre. 3rd in the 3,000 metres in 10:04.99
Rory Carson 1st in the 3KM Steeplechase
Adam Sykes 2nd in the 200M Heat 1
Rory Carson 1st in the 200M Heat 2
Joseph McNaughten. 3rd in the 400M
    Adam Sykes. 2ndin the 100M Heat 1
    Nathan Stewart. 3rdin the 100M Heat 1
    ENERGIA 24 Sat 22 June Noon-Sun 23 June Noon
It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I’ll find the things that you do
    Will make me feel alright
Yes, Energia 24 is a strange beast with many highs and lows, with a little bit of music, but with one constant… you got to keep running…and running…and running!
Our very brave full 24 hour crew were Selina Myles, Michael O’Donoghue, Dave Gribben and Darren Moan who were to run for, well…24 hours!!!
Our also similarly crazy but well-prepared OG-ers for the Relay were Heather Flint, David Carberry, Michael Broadhead and Jonny Weston who…all had to run 2 hours each…3 times this spacing it out over 24 hours in total and in day & night.
The organisation, the weather, the support, camaraderie and performances were all fantastic. I’m sure each of our runners (and supporters) have their own story to tell and their favourite/worst part/memory but I’m sure the main theme to agree on our pride in their performances and their pride in the club support received. Well done all and thanks is passed on to all the support, Energia set-up/take-down crew, massages etc, hugs/laughs/tears and for the runners never feeling alone. Here are some outstanding results:
Mixed Relay Team 1st in their event (and 3rd overall relay team)
New Club Record of 181.90 miles
Michael O’Donoghue New Male 24hr Club Record of 90.17 miles
Selina Myles New Female 24hr Club Record of 72.24 miles.
KIRKISTOWN RACE DUATHLON Sunday 23rd June, 2019 (by Brian Todd)
Compared to the endeavours of those at Victoria Park at the weekend, my duathlon efforts on Sunday morning pale into insignificance. However, in my case, anything to fend off the sometimes tedious business of just running is very welcome! It seemed to be the perfect day for duathlon, sunny, warm and dry….but it wasn’t. There was a very significant breeze blowing which certainly affected the bike component on at least half of the mile and a half circuit. The section of tarmac that had the wind behind was enjoyable but never seemed to compensate for the effort expended on the other bit. In duathlon if you are essentially a runner you must make hay while the sun shines because as soon as you get on two wheels the lycra brigade on expensive carbon fibre rocket machines will quickly swallow you up. There were only eight competitors in my race. It started with a two-lap run (three miles), followed by a ten-lap bike ride (15 miles) and the final bit was another two-lap run (three miles). Twenty-one miles in total, but it felt longer. My times were 22.56, 52.07 and 23.06 with transitions of 59secs and 40secs. Total time 1.39.45 for fourth place out of eight. A very raw rear end is still affecting me twenty-four hours later! Riding the bike at speed against the wind for the guts of an hour was hard work indeed and at the end I felt more exhausted than after any run I have ever done. But, enjoyable nevertheless, and the whole affair is so well organized and presented by Richard Bradley. He deserves more support than he is currently getting!
The race was won by Robert Crandles in 1.28.02 and Bernie Monaghan was first lady in 1.40.47.
LISBURN HALF MARATHON AND 10K Wed 26 June
Still a very popular race with over 1,000 finishing the Half and over 1,500 finishing the 10k. The annual tropical temperature and evening sun did not play a factor in this year’s race but it remains very competitive. Orangegrove’s Luke Harte out in a fabulous performance in the 10k with a time of 36:27 and 16thplace!!
The Half Marathon was won by Eoin Hughes and Gladys Ganiel of North Belfast Harriers in 1:09:14 and 1:18:27 respectively, whereas, James Edgar of City of Lisburn and Kerry Bamber of Ballymena Runners won the 10k in 33:47 and 37:42 respectively.
    Jonny Weston 1:31:44 (HM)
    David Roberts 1:43:37 (HM)
    Carolyn Beattie 1:52:53 (HM)
    Luke Harte 36:27 (10k) (16th)
    Brian Todd 44:26 (10k) (2nd Age Cat)
    Anna Rankin 1:00:26
  8. Weekly Report Monday 10th June – Sunday 16th June 2019

June 24, 2019 11:10 am Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 10th June – Sunday 16th June 2019

    Report by David Fletcher.

This time last year we were in the midst of what seemed like an endless summer with water bottles, sun cream and headgear being almost mandatory apparel for running! This summer has been more of a mixed bag with sometimes 3 seasons in the one day which is a bit of a reflection of the variety of distances and terrain covered by OAC athletes this week.

Woodburn Forest Series, Race 3 (Final Race)

    Tuesday 11th June, 2019.

    by Brian Todd.

Once again the sun was shining and conditions were just about perfect for forest trail running. The organizers, County Antrim Harriers, have either been extremely lucky with the weather or it never rains up at Woodburn in the hills overlooking Carrickfergus! This final race was to be over five miles although most Garmins measured it as just shy of that. It was basically a reverse of Race 2 with one or two bits of lovely track and trail added in that we had not been on before. There was a general consensus from those who took part that this final race was the most enjoyable of the three, even if it did culminate with that awful three quarters of a mile hill from the middle reservoir back to the timing mats at Woodburn Presbyterian Church. However, most of us had learned the hard lesson from Race 1, which had the same finish, that you must leave something in the tank for the last bit…or suffer accordingly. There was quite a bit at stake on this final evening of the series with a number of Orangegrovers in line for age category prizes and at least one, Edwina Ternan, hoping to claim a place on the overall female rostrum. To be in with a chance you really had to compete in all three races, and most of us did. Well, how did it go?

The following times were recorded by Orangegrove members and accompanying friends for Race 3:

    Edwina Ternan…33.39 (3rd lady)

    Brian Todd…36.07

    Colin Simpson…36.30

    Trudy Brown…37.01

    Verity Cornford…40.12

    (Cathy Fraser…40.46)

    Jill Holland…41.18

    Lisa Fleming…43.15

    (Emma McWilliams…43.39)

    Adrienne Savage…44.09

Race 3 was won by Jordan Heron (Larne AC) in 28.14 and Tracey Atkinson (Albertville Harriers) was first lady in 32.54.Following Race 3 there was a prize distribution for those who had completed all three races based on their accumulated times. The following members were awarded age category prizes:-

    Verity Cornford (F40)…100.40mts

    Jill Holland (F50)…104.45mts

    Brian Todd (M65)…89.23mts

However, the greatest accolade of all must go to Edwina Ternan who ran superbly throughout the series, being third lady in two of the three races and finishing second lady overall in the very credible time of 85.56. Very well done Edwina!

The full series was won by Paul Hornan (Larne AC) in 71.08mts and Debbie Matchett (Ballydrain Harriers) won the ladies overall title in 83.12mts.

Once again it was a pleasure to take part in such a fantastic well run race series and early indications are we will return next year!

    Irish Runner Series

    by Ian Wilson.

Leaving a very wet Saturday in Belfast in their wake a merry band of 5 Orangegrove AC members made the trip to a surprisingly very sunny Phoenix Park in Dublin for the second race of the Irish Runner Series. The 5 mile course takes you through the beautiful surroundings of the 2nd largest public park in Europe. Starting with a relatively flat 2 miles the race finishes with an undulating 5k to the finish line. Alan Martin was 1st of the OAC athletes across the line in 42.09 getting ever stronger as he comes back from his injury. Ian Wilson crossed in 47.53, Beverly Martin posted a fantastic sub 50 in 49.03 and Mairead Napier a super 51.17 in her first run in the race series. Dawn Wilson as always provided the much appreciated support and photo duties.

    Roscor 10km

Elaine Weston was our sole OAC participant in the Roscor races run at Shanes Castle by Atlas running. Due to the amount of recent downpours conditions weren’t ideal with some areas being particularly muddy and slippery under foot with several flooded areas to negotiate. Elaine still managed to cover the 10km distance in a respectable 56:23. 1st home in the 10km was Peter McGarry of Mallusk Harriers in 35:11 and 1st lady was Gemma McDonald of Ballycastle Runners in 40:55.

EAMS Loughshore Night 6 Hour Challenge

    by Michael O’Donoghue

A while back EAMS introduced a 6 hour challenge to their events so they can cover every desirable distance ranging from 10k to the ultra runners who want to do longer than a marathon. On this occasion EAMS, because so many of their usual runners including the organisers themselves are doing the upcoming Energia 24 event, they decided to do an event based at night, to simulate the darkness that runners will face during 24 hours. Running long distance events in the dark wearing a headtorch is a different kind of experience if you’re used to running during the daytime and is worth preparing for. There was a reasonable attendance of 70 runners who turned out at the bandstand at Loughshore Park on the Shore Road in Jordanstown. The route involved running from there along the coast as far as Gideons Green and back, which is about 4 miles. Doing this 6 times plus a little extra would get you marathon distance. It started out well enough, but we were soon faced with a sudden heavy downpour that meant a number of people dropping out. In this event even 1 lap gets you a medal so the temptation was there.I decided to tough it out and go as far as marathon distance, though not for the full 6 hours, because its only a week to Energia after all, so I didn’t end up needing my headtorch. There were a number of committed Mallusk Harriers there who were preparing for either Energia 24 or their own event 24 parkruns in 24 hours, who did go the full 6 hours.Though there were people doing different distances the prizes only went to the winning 6 hour runners. These were Micky McAuley (Mallusk Harriers) 10 laps, and Jill McCann (Muck Hogs) 9 laps. I did the marathon in 4 hours 38 minutes which put me in 6th place for the distance.

Hill and Dales Race 9 The Meels

The 9th and penultimate race in the 2019 Hill and Dale series took place last Thursday evening in the beautiful surroundings of the Mourne Mountains. Maybe due to other commitments and possibly a lot post marathon fatigue the challenge of this exciting race series hasn’t had the same OAC following as of previous years, but our mountain specialist Andrew Tees and sometimes sidekick Chairman Montgomery have kept the OAC flag flying in the Mournes! This race was a relatively short sharp lung busting thigh screaming jaunt of around 5 Km in total but as the name of the race suggests there are 2 main climbs are over the peaks of Meelmore (704m) and Meelbeg (702m) to contend with before returning down the sheep tracks to the finish. The winner on the night was Newcastle AC’s Mark Stephens in 28:47. Winner of Ladies race was Esther Dickson Newry AC 34:21. Despite faceplanting into a bog on one of the descents the ever-improving Andrew Tees finished in 4th place with a time of 31:56. With Andrew now regularly featuring in the upper echelons of the leaderboard its only a matter of time before we see him taking home a podium place or 2! Robin Montgomery followed Andrew home in a time of 40:09.

    Carlingford to Flagstaff Mountain Race

    Sunday 16th June

    By Andrew Tees.

Celebrating its 40th year in 2019, and organized by Armagh AC, the classic Flagstaff to Carlingford mountain race is a firm favourite amongst NIMRA runners. The point to point course offers varied and runnable terrain in beautiful surroundings above Carlingford Lough.

This is race where route choice and navigation make all the difference, as proven in 2018 when horrendous visibility left many competitors wandering in the mist on Slieve Foye looking for the summit. Luckily there were no such problems this year, as the recent poor weather abated briefly on Sunday to allow blue skies, and even some sunshine, to grace the hills.

The route of the race starts on the road near Flagstaff viewpoint and proceeds along the ridge of the Cooley Mountains, crossing the border 3 times whilst taking in the summits of Anglesey Hill, Clermont, Black Mountain, Carnavaddy and Slieve Foye, before finishing in the middle of Carlingford town. 11 miles in all, with 1000m of ascent.

Seamus Lynch of Newcastle AC was victorious once again, finishing in 1 hour and 40 minutes and Esther Dickson of Newry AC was first lady and 6th overall in 1:56.

Flying the flag as always for Orangegrove, our very own King of the Mountains Andrew Tees once again put in another strong performance finishing the course with a clean T-shirt and a superb time of 1:57:56 for a magnificent 7th place out of 65 runners. Very well done again Andrew.

As always there was there was the usual smattering of OAC members taking part in local Parkruns, but Parkrun of the week must go to Lisa Fleming who made the long trek to Strabane on the premise that someone important was visiting the Parkrun there. Alas the earlier than usual start and long journey turned out to more than worth it as Lisa got to run with long time hero and Queen of the track Dame Kelly Holmes! I hope you also invited her to VP Lisa!

June 13, 2019 5:07 pm Comments Off on Weekly Report Monday 3rd June – Sunday 9th June 2019

A relatively quiet week of racing for the start of June, the main race of the week being the Fairhill 5 miler, the 6th race in the club championship.

    Fairhill 5 Mile
    Wednesday 5th June
The fact that 31 Orangegrovers made the trip to Ballymena for this midweek fixture shows both the popularity and competitiveness of the club championship in its current format. Organised by Ballymena Runners, the race started and finished in the town centre, taking in two loops of the town on an undulating course with a fast finish.

With many club members coming off the back of spring marathon PBs, there were plenty of strong performances. Keith Weir and Gemma Blake showed why they are top of the club championship tables, finishing as top male and female out of the OAC runners with 30.28 and 33.17 respectively. Gavin McGucken continues to improve with yet another strong run, he finished just a few seconds behind Keith in 30.34. David Montgomery showed he was getting back to form after his return from injury, securing the Montgomery bragging rights by outrunning his brother by almost a minute to finish in 31.17. Maybe Robin was saving himself for Loughshannagh…

There were many high placings across lots of age categories, but a special mention for Reg Sanlon who took top spot in his age category, M70, with a time of 38.44.

    Hill and Dale Series: Loughshannagh
    Thursday 6th June
Taking in the most serious mountain terrain of any race in the series, the Loughshannagh course is also longer and tougher than the rest. A field of 177 took on the 4-peak circuit, being run in an anti-clockwise direction again in 2019. The course first takes in the summit of Carn mountain, before the infamously steep drop down to the lake after which the race is named. After the respite of a flat run along the lakeshore, two steep climbs lead to the tops of Doan and Slieve Loughshannagh and finally a much gentler climb over Ott and downhill to the finish across the bog. The decision by the race directors to insist on full body cover and a kit check were fully vindicated when the clouds rolled in and the rain started to fall just as the race got under way.
In the end Newcastle AC’s Mark Stephens took 1st place (43.53) for his first H&D win and Esther Dickson of Newry AC continued to dominate with another win in the ladies race (49.25).
For Orangegrove, Andrew Tees finished in 5th place (46.43), Robin Montgomery in 67th (59.58) and Judith Dalzell in 1:29.44
Elsewhere last week, Elaine Weston competed in the Taking the Tower race in Ards on Friday night, finishing in 1:16.15.

On Saturday, Selina Myles took on the 26 gruelling miles of the Mourne Way Marathon, from Newcastle to Rostrevor, in 6:17.22. Congratulations Selina on completing such a tough course!
In the Mourne Way Half Marathon race, Steven Gilliland crossed the line in Kilbroney Park for a very creditable 2:14.20.

Woodburn Forest, (Tuesday 28th May, 2019) Report by Brian Todd

The second race of this lovely little series took place last Tuesday evening in the hills above Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. As with the previous race the start and finishing mats were on the path adjacent to Woodburn Presbyterian Church. The first race was three miles; this one was four and a half miles. The paths, trails and shale tracks of Woodburn make for wonderful forest running. The weather helped too. It was a beautiful sunny evening with magnificent visibility all round, but cool enough to keep the midges at bay and to facilitate enjoyable running. The route this time involved the usual run down to and partly around the middle reservoir. However, instead of following the full perimeter of the water we moved sharply uphill at the back of the reservoir to follow a circuitous series of trails (some of them quite remote) back towards the finish, joining the infamous finishing hill about 300 metres short of the mats. It was a challenging enough route that seemed longer than the designated distance and which contained a number of hills at very ‘inconvenient’ places which had the capacity to take the wind out of one’s sails. As always, grateful thanks to County Antrim Harriers for an enjoyable evening amongst the pine.
Highlight of the Orangegrove presence was a great run by Edwina Ternan to finish on the podium as third lady and 22nd overall. Well done Edwina!
The following times were achieved by the OAC contingent and accompanying friends:
    Edwina Ternan…31.09.
    (Colin Simpson…31.46).
    Brian Todd…32.00.
    Trudy Brown…34.05.
    Verity Cornford…36.25.
    (Cathy Fraser…37.34)
    Jill Holland…38.00.
    (Emma McWilliams…39.46)
    Adrienne Savage…39.55.
Woodburn Race 2 was won by Paul Hornan (North Belfast Harriers) in 25.55 and Allyson O’Toole (East Coast Runners) was first lady in 29.46.
The final race of the series is on Tuesday 11th June at 7.30pm (5 miles) and it can be entered online as a single race.

The race was won by Seamus Lynch (Newcastle AC) in 38:36 and Esther Dickson (Newry AC) in 44:36. Representing OAC were the following

Cairncastle Classic – 1st June 2019 (Report by Andrew Tees)

The Cairncastle Classic is a new addition to the NIMRA championship for 2019. Organised by East Coast AC, the race started on the beach in Ballygally and wound through country lanes and fields onto the Antrim Hills Way, taking in the summit of Knock Dhu, Scawt, and the clifftops of Sallagh Braes. Comprising 10 miles and 700m of ascent, it is a very runnable course and a nice bit of variation from the steep and technical slopes of the Mournes! With the finish line being on the beach, chilling tired legs in the sea after the race was an added bonus!
The race was won by Mourne Runners’ Tim Johnston in 1:13:09 and Esther Dickson of Newry AC was first lady and 18th overall in 1:29:52.
For Orangegrove, Andrew Tees finished in 1:25:47 for 10th place.

Kilmood 4 Mile Race. Florida Manor Estate, Sunday, 2nd June, 2019. (Report by Brian Todd)

You have probably not heard of the village of Kilmood or its nearby magnificent 200 acre estate, Florida Manor, currently in the ownership of the Lagan Construction family, Well, neither had I until I was persuaded to run in the Kilmood Four Mile Race on Sunday afternoon. Kilmood is a village near Lisbane in the Killinchy area and the race, by Atlas Running, was in support of the Kilmood Playgroup. The entire race was in the beautifully manicured grounds of the estate which had just about everything, magnificent historic buildings, lakes, woodland, meadow, gardens, prancing horses and, most importantly, runner friendly roads and paths. The weather was magnificent too, dry, sunny and warm without being oppressive. The course consisted of two, two-mile laps of a fairly undulating course which was only to be expected in this part of deepest rural Co. Down. A magnificent feast awaited the finishers which was presented in a marquee which would not have been out of place at a high-end society wedding in Surrey. What a lovely way to spend a few hours in the countryside in June and for a worthy cause too! There were two Orangegrove participants, Elaine Weston and Brian Todd, and their times were as follows: Brian Todd…29.22 (13/73). Elaine Weston…35.15 (32/73). The Kilmood Four Mile Race was won by Kyle Ross (Ballydrain Harriers) in 23.33 and the first lady home was Lisa Corry (Saintfield Striders) in 27.18.

Walled City Marathon Sunday 2nd June 2019

The fab four of Darren Houston, Michael O’Donoghue, Heather Shanks-Miller and Dave Gribben made their way to the North West. Starting at the Everglades Hotel, the route heads towards Newbuildings to a turning point. Coming back into the city, you cross the Craigavon Bridge, take a left and run another loop before crossing the bridge again. At the 16 mile point there is a tough climb up the Limavady Road before dropping down to the banks of the River Foyle. Crossing the peace bridge at 20 miles gives the runners a last six miles which includes a final hill at mile 25 before finishing at Guild Hall Square. Times for the fab four were
    Dave Gribben 3:22:50
    Michael O’Donoghue 4:03:07
    Heather Shanks-Miller 4:04:10
    Darren Houston 4:19:47
Eric Koech of Project Africa (2:34:19) and Natalie Hall of Armagh AC (3:03:35) were victorious.
