Bay Road 5k

9th April, 2014, Derry

A few hardy Orangegrovers made the 150 mile round trip to Stroke City for this race.

The Bay Road 5k (hosted by City of Derry Spartans) was the final race in the Northern Ireland Masters Athletics Association league so there were precious points to be won. Hugh Young was sitting in 1st place in the MV70 category and was looking to keep this place. Jacqui Maxwell was 2nd in FV50 group, Liz Leitch was 7th in FV40 and needed all the points she could get!

This race incorporated the NI 5k road race championships also, so there were shiny NI medals to be won.

Liz was our 1st finisher in a time of 21.36 which is a PB and also won her 1st place in her age group (and NI FV40 champion!) Thomas ran round with Liz to stop her from stopping to admire any dogs.

She was closely followed by the ever improving Jacqui who ran 22.16 (another PB) and missed out on an age group podium place by mere seconds.

Hugh was 2nd in his age category finishing strongly in 25 .25.

The men’s race was won by Glenn Phair of Annadale Striders in 14.47, 1st lady was Helen Stockdale of Finn Valley (18.12)

Refreshments were provided afterwards in the hall with some of our finely tuned athletes stopping in Dungiven on the way home to spend their winnings on chips!

The prizes were distributed by ANI President Gary Keenan.

The results of the NI Masters will be released soon but it looks like OAC may have 2 category winners (Sharon D and Hugh) and 2 second placed athletes (Jacqui and Liz).
